Currently, employers can dismiss employees without a valid reason if they have been in their job for less than two years.

This affects all workers, but particularly young, LGBT, Black, and Asian workers who are more likely to have been in their jobs for less than two years.

Most people would agree this is unfair dismissal but that’s not what the law says.

Angela Rayner presented Labour's employment rights green paper in 2021, addressing this issue.
