Keeping the Promise of People-Centered Development
The world is gathering for the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, 30 years after the initial promise to prioritize people in development.
“Thirty years ago, the world gathered in Copenhagen and made a promise: to put people at the centre of development.
This Summit, taking place from 4 to 6 November 2025 in Qatar, is critical due to widening inequalities, eroding trust, and communities struggling with conflict and climate shocks, according to UN DESA’s Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua.
- The journey began in Denmark in 1995 with the Copenhagen Declaration for Social Development and its Programme of Action, agreed upon by 117 countries.
