"To anyone who’s ever tried to start something new on campus, I see you. It’s hard." The author's journey with fencing began at the age of 10, when they first picked up a fencing sword.

As a soccer player, they lacked coordination with their arms, but as soon as the bout started, they were hooked. Fencing demanded focus, precision, and heart, providing a physical environment similar to a chess match.

It provided the deep thinking of a chess match in a physical environment.

Fencing became more than a sport for the author - it became a lifeline, keeping them active, grounded, and connected to a community that understood them. Upon arriving at Notre Dame, they were surprised to find no fencing club for regular students, despite the university being home to the best varsity fencing team in the nation.

The author's reaction was one of disappointment, feeling like a "punch to the gut".
