Cardinal McElroy on Cultivating Hope

Cardinal Robert McElroy, archbishop of Washington, spoke with Fr. Robert Dowd about cultivating hope in a polarized world.

McElroy visited Notre Dame for a conversation titled "Healing our National Dialogue and Political Life." He discussed building a more unified society and the role of politics in today's world.

McElroy's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in American History from Harvard, master's and doctorate degrees in American history and political science from Stanford University, and a doctorate in moral theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

Pope Francis appointed McElroy to the College of Cardinals in May 2022 and as the eighth archbishop of Washington in January.

McElroy is "an ideal person to have on our campus to talk about what it means to cultivate hope," said Fr. Dowd.
