Proportion of Care Workers with Basic Qualifications Hits New Low

Following the government's £115m cut to planned adult social care training funding in 2024-25, the proportion of care workers in England with a basic qualification has reached a new low.

The annual stocktake of the workforce revealed that the share of care and support workers with a level 2 qualification, equivalent to a good GCSE, fell to 38% in 2024-25, down from 41% in 2023-24, according to Skills for Care's latest report.

The reduction in qualified care workers coincides with the government's cut to sector training funding, some of which was intended to support staff in achieving level 2 qualifications.

The fall in qualified care workers follows a £115m cut to planned spending on sector training in 2024-25.
