Functional Skills Maths Isn’t Functioning, We All Know It

Functional skills maths exam questions show little connection to the real mathematical problems faced in workplaces. The curriculum and assessment review’s final report acknowledged that it heard

“overwhelmingly” from providers that, for most learners, functional skills qualifications (FSQs) “do not currently serve as an appropriate pathway” to level 2.
This clear criticism should lead to a redesign focused on creating a more relevant, adaptable, and genuinely practical qualification.

The recent skills white paper failed to resolve the issue of FSQ maths for 16 to 18-year-old apprentices. The government could have extended the removal of the level 2 pass requirement, already dropped for apprentices aged 19 and above earlier this year.

At Remit Training, there is a strong belief that the real solution is not in removing requirements but in reforming and modernizing the limited FSQ maths curriculum. Many employers maintain that the current approach does not meet the needs of the workplace.
