Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has filed charges against a man she described as “completely drunk” who harassed her on Tuesday. She called the event “an assault on all women.”
The incident occurred in Mexico City’s central neighborhood, Zócalo, where the man pushed through a crowd greeting President Sheinbaum. Viral footage shows him approaching her, touching her breast, and attempting to kiss her while bystanders watched.
The harassment ended when Juan José Ramírez Mendoza, one of Sheinbaum’s top aides, intervened. The man was arrested overnight and is currently held at the Sex Crimes Investigation Unit, according to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada.
“It was an assault on all women,” said President Sheinbaum, emphasizing her decision to pursue legal action against the man.
Sheinbaum is Mexico’s first female president and announced her motivation to take legal steps on Wednesday following the assault.
