A UPS plane crashed shortly after takeoff near Louisville International Airport, Kentucky, resulting in at least 12 fatalities and several injuries. The number of deaths is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
Officials reported more than a dozen people injured and at least 14 still unaccounted for late Wednesday. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg warned the death toll could increase.
"We do not expect to find anyone else alive," Governor Beshear said during a news briefing on Wednesday afternoon.
The plane was crewed by three UPS members, but authorities have not yet confirmed if they were among the deceased. The governor noted, "there were a handful of other people that we're still searching for." It is also believed one of the victims is a young child.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation and recovered the plane’s black boxes, which record flight data. A state of emergency was declared by Governor Beshear on Wednesday.
"The Jefferson County Coroner has been at the scene and will make identifications," said Mayor Greenberg.
