Toronto Hydro has confirmed that electricity has been restored to the Moss Park neighborhood, more than 24 hours after a major outage affected nearly 600 customers.
The outage began at approximately 8:11 a.m. on Wednesday due to an underground cable fault. The issue left hundreds of customers without service for over a day.
According to Toronto Hydro, power was restored around 1 p.m. on Thursday after extensive underground repair work.
“As our crews continue underground repairs, we’ve identified that the cable fault causing this outage appears to be the result of a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area,” Toronto Hydro said in a social media update just before 4:30 p.m.
The utility added that the construction activity was unrelated to its own operations but caused damage to its underground infrastructure.
“The repair process was complex and time-consuming due to the fault’s location. It involves safely identifying, repairing, and testing the damaged infrastructure before returning it to service,” a spokesperson explained.
Toronto Hydro initially projected service restoration by 8:30 a.m. Thursday, later adjusting the timeline to 11:30 a.m. and eventually to the afternoon. The final restoration was confirmed mid-afternoon after the completion of safety tests and inspections.
“The damage caused by the third-party contractor is extensive, with the dig-ins occurring in multiple spots,” Toronto Hydro said.
