On Tuesday, President Claudia Sheinbaum was assaulted while greeting supporters near the presidential palace in Mexico City. A drunken man approached her, placed his arm around her shoulder, and groped her hip and chest while trying to kiss her neck. The incident occurred as she was walking to a public event.

Response and Immediate Actions

A member of the presidential security team quickly intervened and removed the man. Despite the attack, Sheinbaum initially seemed unaware of the full extent of the assault and even agreed to take a photo with the man. She later reviewed footage and recognized what had occurred.

"This person approached, completely intoxicated (...) it wasn't until I saw the videos later that I realized what had really happened," Sheinbaum said on Wednesday.

The attacker was arrested and charged with harassment. This charge is recognized and enforced in Mexico City and about 20 other Mexican states, though it is not yet a nationwide crime.
