Celebrity chef, presenter, and restaurateur Rick Stein has addressed the unexpected closure of his only Wiltshire restaurant in an exclusive interview. Stein, known for his chain of popular UK restaurants and several cookbooks, opened the Marlborough location in 2016, marking his sixth restaurant in England.
The Wiltshire restaurant showcased some of Rick Stein’s signature dishes, such as Dover sole a la meunière and turbot hollandaise. However, it abruptly shut its doors on October 5.
Speaking to the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald about his new book and a forthcoming TV appearance, Stein revealed the closure was driven by economic pressures and declining customer numbers. He emphasized that the decision was difficult and not desired.
"We decided to close because there just wasn’t enough business. We’re not going under, but we are having to restructure our business just because of the hard time we’re going through."
"The whole hospitality industry is suffering. Personally, I think it’s a mixture of the government’s last budget and the quite grim economic time we have been going through."
Rick Stein clarified that while the Marlborough closure was necessary, his wider business remains operational, adapting to challenging market conditions.
The closure of Rick Stein’s Marlborough restaurant highlights the harsh economic realities facing the hospitality sector, prompting strategic restructuring despite his enduring business presence.
