Carrie Bickmore has been recognized as the 2026 Victorian Australian of the Year for her outstanding contributions to brain cancer research. The award was presented at a moving ceremony in Melbourne, highlighting her dedicated advocacy for brain cancer awareness and funding.
Bickmore's advocacy began after the tragic loss of her husband, Greg Lange, to brain cancer in 2010. This personal experience inspired her to create the Carrie's Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation in 2015, through which she has raised over $27 million to support brain cancer research.
In 2021, Carrie expanded her efforts by establishing The Brain Cancer Centre, which connects researchers and clinicians to advance clinical trials and research. The center has successfully secured $45 million in funding for various brain cancer research projects throughout Australia.
Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among children and young adults under 40 in Australia.
Bickmore's work continues to address this critical health challenge, focusing on improving treatment options and survival rates for patients and families affected by brain cancer.
Carrie Bickmore’s dedication to brain cancer research and advocacy, fueled by personal loss, has driven significant funding and initiatives to improve outcomes for patients across Australia.
