Urgent tomato sauce recall over fears it could cause botulism

Urgent Tomato Sauce Recall Over Botulism Fears

Three tomato-based pasta sauces have been urgently recalled in the United States amid concerns they may contain Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium capable of causing deadly food poisoning. Consumers are being warned that eating these products could pose severe health risks.

Details of the Recall

First and Last Bakery, LLC issued the recall after discovering production irregularities. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the affected sauces were produced without an approved safety schedule, which should prevent the formation of dangerous bacteria.

Products Affected

The recall covers 26-ounce jars sold in Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and possibly other retailers. The products were distributed from 22 September 2025 with a use-by date of 26 September.

“The affected products were produced without an approved schedule, meaning the production process was not adequately evaluated to prevent the formation of this dangerous bacterium,” reported the Independent.

Health Warning and Consumer Advice

Although no illnesses have been reported, botulism remains a potentially fatal condition. Consumers who purchased the recalled sauces are strongly advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, the Daily Record reported.

FDA’s Statement

The FDA emphasized that proper manufacturing controls are essential for preventing Clostridium botulinum contamination and urged consumers to check labels before consumption.
