Wrexham footballer James McClean is frequently surrounded by controversy due to his refusal to wear a poppy, a symbol of remembrance. He recently shared that his teammates are often taken aback but remain respectful when he explains his reasons.
McClean’s career has been overshadowed by debates over this issue, stemming from his upbringing on the Creggan estate in Derry. This estate was home to about half of the 13 unarmed civilians killed by British soldiers during Bloody Sunday in 1972.
“I cannot wear the poppy as it represents all conflicts the UK has been involved in,” McClean has stated before.
This issue resurfaces each year around Remembrance Day, causing McClean ongoing frustration. In an interview with Westlife singer Nicky Byrne, the 36-year-old admitted he wished the controversy that began in 2012 while playing for Sunderland would end.
“I’ve grown frustrated at constantly having to explain my beliefs,” he said.
He also revealed that his wife feared he might be shot live on television due to the hostility directed at him.
James McClean faces ongoing backlash over his decision not to wear a poppy but finds some understanding among teammates once he shares the deeply personal reasons behind his stance.
