Tomato Sauce Recall Issued Over Deadly Bacteria Concern—What to Know

Tomato Sauce Recall Issued Over Potential Botulism Risk

First and Last Bakery, LLC of Hartford, Connecticut, is recalling certain tomato sauce products due to concerns about possible botulism contamination, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Products Included in the Recall

Distribution Details

The recalled tomato sauces were sold in Connecticut and Massachusetts, primarily through the Big Y supermarket chain and possibly other retailers, from September 22 to October 28.

Reason for the Recall

The FDA states that the products were "manufactured without an approved scheduled process or otherwise evaluated to determine if the process is adequate." Improper processing of acidified or low-acid canned foods can cause the growth of Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism.

Health Risks and Symptoms of Botulism

Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause general weakness, dizziness, double vision, and difficulty speaking or swallowing.

Additional symptoms may include difficulty breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal bloating, and constipation.

Current Status

No illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported so far.
