America Is Great When America Is Good

America Is Great When America Is Good

Those who cherish liberty and dignity must never yield to the forces opposing what we hold most dear. As America nears the 250th anniversary of its founding, I often reflect on Thomas Paine’s inspiring call to action: The times have found us.

The times have found us.

Paine and our Founders showed immense courage by declaring independence from a king, winning a war against the strongest empire, and crafting a Constitution—thankfully, one that can be amended. In the century that followed, Abraham Lincoln answered the call of the times by preserving the Union through the Civil War.

Today, the times have found us yet again. Throughout our lives and the nation’s history, great hardship often precedes great good. We understand this clearly: the things we cherish never come without struggle.

Our nation was shaped through war, protest, and the slow, persistent work of many centuries. We have always aimed to perfect our union, especially when facing challenges that appear insurmountable.

This is another period of significant difficulty. It amazes me how many can witness the suffering of others yet remain inactive. I know millions of Americans feel this way now.

However, America’s story is one of endurance through hardship and holding onto hope despite fear.

The story of this country is the story of patience in tribulation, and hope in the face of fear.

Author’s summary: America’s greatness comes from rising above hardship with courage, patience, and hope, continually striving to perfect the union despite daunting challenges.
