City Council Debate on Temporary Housing Shelters

The Athens City Council held a meeting on October 20, where over 25 community members expressed concerns about an ordinance for temporary shelters on North Congress Street.

Key concerns included safety, winter weather, substance abuse, and misinformation. The council meeting, attended by all members and Mayor Steve Patterson, discussed Ordinance 0-112-25, which allows three Conestoga Huts to be placed in the Gathering Place lot.

The ordinance can be revoked at any time by the Service Safety Director due to safety or sanitation concerns.
