AAP FactCheck has debunked social media claims that almost a million migrants who arrived in Australia between 2022/23 and 2023/24 will soon be invited to become citizens.
The claims are based on data that mostly includes existing citizens and temporary migrants, who are not yet eligible for citizenship. Permanent visas, a precursor to citizenship, are granted at a much lower rate.
False claims about immigration have been used to promote an upcoming anti-immigration march planned for major cities across Australia on October 19.
This is not the first time false claims have been used to promote anti-immigration protests. An earlier protest in August was also promoted using debunked claims about immigration.
