Sjømat Norge adds criticism to new Norwegian aquaculture scheme

Sjømat Norge Criticizes New Norwegian Aquaculture Scheme

Sjømat Norge, a seafood industry group, has expressed criticism towards Norway's new "environmental flexibility" scheme for aquaculture, stating it does not meet Parliament's demand for a technology-neutral system.

According to Jon Arne Grøttum, Director of Aquaculture at the Norwegian Seafood Federation, the scheme lacks sufficient technological flexibility, limits innovation, and contradicts the intentions of Parliament.

The regulation was published on 10 October, following the Norwegian parliament's approval of aquaculture policy updates originally proposed in April 2025.

The Norwegian Seafood Federation has published its official response, arguing that the scheme does not align with Parliament's demands.
