The Greenville Advocate reports that Governor Kay Ivey has proclaimed October as Farm to School Month in Alabama, celebrating the connection between local farmers, schools, and students.
Since 2020, the Alabama Farm to School Program has received $1.595 million from the State legislature for the Farm to School incentive program. As a result, schools have spent $3,724,315 on Alabama-grown products and served 8,504,382 meals featuring local foods.
“We are proud to see Alabama students enjoying fresh, locally grown foods, while also supporting Alabama farmers,” said Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Rick Pate.
Commissioner Pate emphasized that Farm to School Month highlights the importance of connecting the next generation with the origin of their food and recognizes the dedication of farmers and school staff.
