Pope Leo XIV traveled to Lebanon from November 30 to December 2, focusing on humanitarian and interfaith efforts. During his stay, he visited the country’s largest psychiatric hospital, which receives support from Misereor, the German Catholic development organization.
In his address at the hospital, the Pope emphasized compassion and dignity for those suffering from mental illness, saying:
“True healing is not only medical but rooted in love and understanding.”
He commended the hospital’s staff for their commitment to caring for the vulnerable despite Lebanon’s ongoing economic and social struggles.
Misereor has long been engaged in Lebanon through projects addressing health care, education, and poverty reduction. Its partnership with local institutions, including the psychiatric hospital, aims to promote inclusive health systems and support communities affected by crisis.
Throughout the visit, Pope Leo XIV met with religious and political leaders to encourage dialogue between Christian and Muslim communities. He underscored the importance of unity and cooperation in rebuilding trust and stability in the region.
“Peace grows where people choose to look beyond divisions and serve one another,” he stated during a joint interfaith meeting in Beirut.
