Williams F1 boss James Vowles races in Abu Dhabi

The 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix marks the conclusion of the Formula 1 season for most of the paddock. However, Williams team principal James Vowles extended his stay in the UAE to take part in the Gulf 12 Hours endurance race, held at the Yas Marina Circuit.

From pit wall to driver’s seat

Vowles, who has worked in F1 for over two decades, joined Williams as team principal in 2023 after a long career at Mercedes. Beyond his leadership role, he has an enduring passion for driving and racing. The Gulf 12 Hours gave him a rare opportunity to step out from the pit wall and compete behind the wheel in a professional endurance event.

He joined a multi-driver lineup that included both seasoned amateurs and semi-professionals, driving GT cars across two six-hour segments of racing. The event, known for its mix of pro-am teams and challenging track conditions, attracts notable motorsport figures from around the world each winter.

“I’ve always loved the technical and competitive side of racing,” Vowles said before the event. “Getting to race at Yas Marina after the F1 weekend feels like closing the season on a high note.”

Endurance and engineering insight

For Vowles, the race was more than just a personal thrill. Participating in an endurance event provides valuable insight into the mindset of drivers and engineers at a different level of motorsport. Such experience often translates into better understanding of driver feedback, car dynamics, and race logistics—key components for leading a Formula 1 team.

Williams has made clear progress since Vowles took over, with improved strategy and operational efficiency throughout the 2024 season. His participation in the Abu Dhabi race underscores his hands-on approach and continued enthusiasm for the sport in all its forms.

“Learning never stops,” Vowles added. “Being in the cockpit reminds me what our drivers go through and strengthens the connection between leadership, engineering, and racing performance.”
