The Sacramento State men’s basketball team opened its season with a dominant 103–79 win over Division II Dominican University of California on Tuesday night, marking the first game under new head coach Mike Bibby and the debut of the newly built Hornets Pavilion.
The victory extended Sac State’s all-time record against non–Division I opponents to 52–0. The Hornets overcame a narrow 41–39 halftime lead before surging in the second half through improved defense and sharp shooting, at one point extending the margin to 26 points.
Bibby, a 14-year NBA veteran and former Sacramento Kings standout, earned his first collegiate coaching victory in his debut. Taking over a program that went 7–25 last season and finished last in the Big Sky Conference for two consecutive years, Bibby faces the task of rebuilding a drastically revamped roster that added 14 new players during the offseason.
“It wasn’t nervous,” Bibby said. “I can’t get on the court and control what happens in the game.”
“If we don’t foul them and give up layups, it’s not that close of a game,” Bibby said.
The game drew a full house to Hornets Pavilion, signaling renewed excitement around the team’s new era under Bibby’s leadership. For fans and players alike, the decisive win highlighted the potential for a fresh start after two difficult seasons.
