During a trip to a Toronto bookstore, Brock Nelson and his former New York Islanders teammate Matt Martin discovered the character Violet Sorrengail from the popular novel “Fourth Wing.” Around the same time, goalie Scott Wedgewood became immersed in the dragon-filled “romantasy” world while driving from Michigan to Denver.
More than 2,500 fans purchased special tickets for “Fourth Wing Night” on Thursday at Ball Arena. The event celebrates Rebecca Yarros’ debut novel in the “Empyrean” series. Yarros, a Colorado Springs resident and devoted hockey mom, is expected to attend, much to the joy of fans and players alike.
“I’m pumped for that night, the jersey, having Rebecca there,” said Nelson. “I’m hoping I get to meet her. It’s cool to have that connection now.”
Nelson also recalled how he found out Yarros had attended one of his games: “Last year, I remember someone said, ‘Hey, did you see the author of ‘Fourth Wing’ was at one of your games?’ I had no idea. Then I saw she’s a huge fan. Fast forward to now with ‘Fourth Wing’ night, and it’s pretty cool.”
The Yarros family are strong Avalanche supporters. Despite Rebecca’s husband being an East Coast native and lifelong Rangers fan, they’ve embraced Colorado’s hockey community. They even attended a Denver game last season when the topic of Rebecca throwing the first pitch at Fenway Park came up.
Rebecca Yarros’ love for hockey meets fandom as “Fourth Wing” night at Ball Arena unites readers, players, and the author herself in a celebration of fantasy and sport.
