Typhoon Fung-wong Moves Away from the Philippines, Leaving 8 Dead and 1.4 Million Displaced

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Typhoon Fung-wong exited the northwestern Philippines on Monday after causing severe flooding and landslides. The storm left at least eight people dead and forced around 1.4 million others to flee their homes as entire provinces lost power.

According to the weather bureau, the typhoon was expected to move northwest toward Taiwan. The storm struck the northern Philippines while the nation was still reeling from the destruction caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi a week earlier. Kalmaegi had killed at least 224 people in central provinces on November 4 before moving on to Vietnam, where it claimed at least five more lives.

Impact and Path

Fung-wong made landfall in northeastern Aurora province on Sunday night as a super typhoon with sustained winds of up to 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts reaching 230 kph (143 mph). The 1,800-kilometer (1,100-mile)-wide system weakened as it passed through mountainous northern areas and agricultural plains overnight, before moving out from La Union province toward the South China Sea, state forecasters reported.

Casualties and Damage

“The storm caused widespread flooding and destruction, compounding the suffering of communities still recovering from the previous typhoon,” officials said.
Aftermath

Authorities continued evacuations and cleanup efforts as the weather cleared, warning that weakened infrastructure could still pose risks in affected provinces.

Author’s summary: Typhoon Fung-wong devastated northern Philippines, killing eight, displacing 1.4 million, and compounding damage from an earlier deadly storm.
