Rachel Homan defeated Kaitlyn Lawes 8-3 Thursday night at the KIOTI GSOC Tahoe, extending her team’s winning streak to 30 consecutive games against other Canadian clubs. Since the start of the 2023-24 season, Team Homan’s record against Canadian teams stands impressively at 80-2.
Despite the dominant statistics, victories haven’t always come easily. In the third end, Homan capitalized on a critical moment, stealing two points after Lawes’s shot fell short and tight. Later, in the seventh end, Homan took a calculated risk with a difficult shot to score another two points. She drove Lawes's stone out, which then clipped a rock outside the house and bumped another Homan stone into the rings.
The venue, Tahoe Blue Event Center, located on the Nevada side of the border, offers a place where such calculated risks are more common.
“Yeah, getting two there was huge,” said Sarah Wilkes, Team Homan’s lead stone thrower. “Going into that end, we kind of talked about what was ideal. Being forced was probably the least ideal out of all the situations. Definitely got a little lucky with the way we got the two, but it was a huge momentum swing for sure.”
Lawes held the hammer in the final end, trailing 6-3, needing a remarkable shot to turn the game around.
Rachel Homan’s team continues to show outstanding dominance over Canadian competitors, securing key victories through skillful play and strategic risks.
