Courts across the North East continue to deliver sentences to those involved in the violent unrest that shook the region during the summer of 2024. The disturbances, marked by shocking scenes in Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, and Darlington, followed the tragic Southport attack where three young girls lost their lives.
According to the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), more than 1,000 people were arrested during riots across the UK.
Dane Peace, aged 30, was convicted of breaking into a NatWest bank and participating in a burglary at a vape shop amid the violent disorder in Sunderland. He was sentenced in October to two years and four months in prison.
Shay Henson, 19, from Padgate Road, Sunderland, pled guilty to charges of riot and burglary. Captured on camera wearing a balaclava and throwing objects—including a plant—at police officers, Henson also stole vapes from a shop forced open during the riots. He received a 32-month sentence in a young offenders institution last month.
These individuals were among those whose actions brought lasting shame to the North East during the violent disturbances that stunned communities across the region.
