New 2026 Toyota Hilux unveiled! Australian release date, engines and everything else you need to know

New 2026 Toyota Hilux Unveiled

Toyota has revealed what it describes as the "most Australian Hilux ever developed," set to hit Australian showrooms within weeks. Despite sharing its chassis and engine with the previous generation, the ninth-generation Hilux focuses on meeting the specific needs of its buyers, according to Toyota.

Platform and Powertrain

Unlike the US-market Tacoma, which adopted the GA-F platform in 2022, the new Hilux will continue using the existing IMV platform that supported the previous model. The 2.8-litre ‘1GD’ turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine remains, delivering 150kW and 500Nm of torque when paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Manual models have a torque limit of 420Nm.

Electrification and Variants

A fully electric version of the Hilux is confirmed for 2026, with a hydrogen fuel cell variant expected by 2028. Currently, no hybrid or plug-in hybrid models are planned, though Toyota has not ruled out these options for the future.

From the SR5 grade and above in dual-cab models, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system adds an extra 8.5kW and 65Nm to the drivetrain during low-speed driving, continuing the setup from the current model.

Configurations and Drivetrains

"Toyota has finally unveiled what it’s calling the ‘most Australian Hilux ever developed’."

The core cab design stays largely unchanged, maintaining familiarity for existing customers while delivering modernized features and powertrain improvements.

Author’s Summary

The 2026 Toyota Hilux, dubbed the most Australian ever, retains proven mechanics but introduces electrification options, aiming to meet the evolving needs of its core market.
