Album Review: Nervous Twitch — The Day Job Gets in the Way

I reviewed Leeds-based band Nervous Twitch’s fourth album Some People Never Change back in 2022, so it was a pleasant surprise when singer Erin asked me to review their newest release — the aptly titled The Day Job Gets in The Way.

On first listen, it’s obvious that Nervous Twitch haven’t lost their gift for turning everyday frustrations into joyful rebellion. While their previous album carried a "less-angry riot grrrl" vibe, this one feels looser and more playful, yet just as energetic.

If I were to compare, it shares some DNA with The Slits: quirky, rough-edged punk with a DIY spirit. Still, the band has crafted a sound that’s uniquely theirs — scrappy but melodic, raw yet instantly catchy.

“The production has a charmingly rough-around-the-edges, almost vinyl feel — like something you’d stumble across in a second-hand record shop and instantly fall in love with.”

Erin’s vocals sit sweetly over wiry guitars and a driving rhythm section, adding unexpected warmth even to the sharper lyrics. Don’t be deceived by this sweetness.

Summary: Nervous Twitch’s The Day Job Gets in the Way blends playful punk energy with raw charm, delivering a distinct and infectious sound full of relatable rebellion.
