Perth Scorchers captain Sophie Devine was shocked during a Women's Big Bash League match against Sydney Sixers on Sunday after an extraordinary dismissal.
In the eighth over of the Scorchers' innings, the New Zealand star left her crease to attack a delivery from Ashleigh Gardner. Devine missed the ball entirely, and wicket-keeper Emma Manix-Greeves also failed to catch it cleanly.
The ball deflected from Greeves’ gloves onto the stumps while Devine was still out of her crease, creating a stumping chance.
The controversy arose because the wicket-keeper instinctively pushed her gloves forward, appearing to disturb the bails. The on-field umpires consulted the third umpire for a review.
"The third umpire ruled that the stumps were broken before the wicket-keeper's gloves made contact, a decision that surprised both Devine and the crowd."
Despite Devine's disbelief, the third umpire’s decision stood, and she was given out.
Devine initially refused to leave the field, standing still in shock, but eventually walked back to the dressing room after a pause.
This rare and unexpected stumping dismissal highlighted the fine margins and unique moments that make cricket captivating.
