Could Maitland Be the Answer for the Jets? This Mayor Thinks So

The Jets and Venues NSW are in conflict over a significant security bond requirement. Mayor Philip Penfold suggests that an upgraded Maitland Sportsground could become the new home for the Newcastle Jets.

The Newcastle Herald disclosed that the A-League club is in a dispute with Venues NSW, the government agency managing several stadiums in New South Wales, about a $300,000 upfront bond to rent McDonald Jones Stadium this season.

Venues NSW has warned that it may take action to safeguard its interests if the Jets do not pay $250,000 by next Wednesday. Last year, the Jets, under new ownership, agreed to pay $300,000 due to the club’s prior history of unpaid fees under previous management. They are now understood to have cleared all outstanding debts.

Focused on rebuilding and stabilizing finances, the Jets proposed what they consider a more reasonable bond arrangement this year. They are willing to pay in advance for two home games out of their 13 scheduled at McDonald Jones Stadium, but Venues NSW rejected this offer.

Currently, McDonald Jones Stadium is the only venue in the region suitable for the Jets' home games, with a capacity of 30,000. This ongoing dispute highlights the pressing need for a new 10,000 to 12,000-seat stadium in the area.
