The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated a 10% reduction in flights at 40 major airports, including Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA), due to the federal government shutdown effective November 7.
This decision will affect Avelo Airlines, which currently operates flights from these hubs. According to a statement on Avelo's website,
"We will carefully assess flights in and out of these airports and make thoughtful schedule changes that support the FAA’s efforts and minimize disruptions to customers."
Kris Hallstrand, director of Lakeland Linder International Airport, confirmed close communication with Avelo Airlines regarding the FAA’s flight reductions. She stated,
"We are working closely with our airline partner to discuss ways to help mitigate the impact of the airspace reduction. We are working to make ourselves available as an alternative airport at this time."
Currently, Avelo offers service to eight destinations from Lakeland Linder, and none of these airports are among the 40 affected by the flight cuts.
The FAA’s enforced flight reductions at key Florida airports may create an opportunity for Lakeland Linder International Airport to serve as an alternate hub for Avelo Airlines, helping reduce travel disruption.
