A large fire broke out Friday night at the Olympia Place apartment complex on Olympia Drive in Amherst, displacing more than 200 residents. The blaze began around 8:19 p.m. in a building under construction and quickly spread to adjacent structures.
Although no injuries were reported, 232 residents from the complex were forced to evacuate. Town Manager Paul Bockelman has declared a state of emergency, urging residents to limit non-essential water use to support firefighting efforts.
"Over a million gallons of water has been used so far to extinguish the fire and officials say it will take days to recover the town's water levels."
Fire officials report the fire remains active but is under control. Crews will continue working throughout the night to fully contain it.
Summary: A major fire at Amherst’s Olympia Place displaced over 200 people and led to a state of emergency declaration due to extensive damage and strained water resources.
