Sigourney Weaver, known for her iconic roles in Aliens and Avatar, is set to join the Star Wars universe in the 2026 film The Mandalorian and Grogu. With three major franchises already to her name—Ghostbusters, Alien, and Avatar—this will be her fourth.
Weaver shared her surprise at joining this new franchise:
“It was not my intention to find a fourth franchise. I didn’t ever imagine that I would enter the Star Wars world.”
Her decision was influenced by the evolving direction of the Star Wars stories.
In a discussion with Empire, Weaver explained why she took on the role:
“It’s always the script. With The Mandalorian and Grogu, they’re no longer trying to do the Star Wars to end all Star Wars. They’re letting the universe exist and telling really interesting stories within that.”
This fresh approach contrasts with past efforts where the franchise aimed to create a definitive, all-encompassing Star Wars story.
In recent years, the franchise faced difficulties finding its footing, especially following the mixed reactions to Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. Weaver’s comments suggest the franchise is now embracing a broader storytelling scope rather than chasing a singular defining saga.
Sigourney Weaver embraces a fresh, story-driven Star Wars future, highlighting a shift away from seeking a “Star Wars to end all Star Wars” toward richer, diverse narratives.
