Japan is on high alert after a strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck offshore, triggering tsunami warnings for northern coastal regions.
Authorities have urged residents to stay away from the shore as waves up to one metre in height could hit at any moment.
The quake occurred around 5:03 PM local time, reminding many of the catastrophic 2011 earthquake and tsunami that claimed over 18,500 lives and led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
