LSU made a mid-game quarterback change against Alabama, pulling starter Garrett Nussmeier in favor of backup Michael Van Buren. While Nussmeier’s performance was statistically steady, the Tigers' offense lacked momentum.
At the time of the switch, Nussmeier had completed 18 of 21 passes for 121 yards, without recording either a touchdown or an interception. However, LSU trailed Alabama 17–6 when his critical red-zone miscue prompted the move.
During a play where Alabama rushed only three defenders, Nussmeier was sacked after scrambling into pressure, eliminating a key touchdown opportunity. LSU had to settle for a field goal—a costly outcome given the circumstances.
Interim coach Frank Wilson was visibly frustrated on the sidelines and appeared to reprimand Nussmeier following the sequence.
ABC analyst Sean McDonough noted the heated exchange, comparing it to sideline outbursts seen under former LSU coach Brian Kelly. Van Buren entered with around six minutes left in the third quarter, giving LSU a chance to recover while the game remained within reach.
LSU benched Garrett Nussmeier after a crucial red-zone mistake against Alabama, giving backup Michael Van Buren a late opportunity as frustration grew on the Tigers’ sideline.
