The highly anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, will not have an IMAX release as initially planned. This decision comes amid fierce competition for IMAX screens in 2026.
Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey, set to release on July 17, 2026, appears to have reserved the majority of IMAX theaters for its run. As a result, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have reportedly decided to forgo an IMAX edition for Brand New Day, which launches two weeks later.
"Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey will be taking up so many IMAX theaters upon its release July 17, that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios has chosen not to pursue an IMAX run for Brand New Day."
While Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to generate significant box office revenue, it won't compete for the largest screen presence. Interestingly, Nolan’s Odyssey is specially filmed for IMAX, which likely influenced the studios’ choice to allow it priority.
"In an era of Marvel movie domination, it's hard to imagine any project pushing out a film set firmly within the MCU."
Fans can still expect to see Tom Holland on the big screen in 2026, though not in IMAX for the Spider-Man film.
Author's summary: Despite expectations, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in 2026 will skip IMAX theaters, conceding screen dominance to Christopher Nolan’s IMAX-specific film, The Odyssey.
