At 83 years old, Ita remains positive despite facing an uncertain future. After back surgery in 2021, she experienced symptoms that led to a diagnosis of isolated gait disorder. Although doctors are unsure if the surgery caused her condition or whether it will worsen, Ita now relies on a wheelchair.
"I haven't walked properly since the back surgery."
Her new dependence on others for mobility is a major adjustment. Instead of focusing on the challenges, Ita highlights the positives, including relief from back pain.
"I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have."
Despite occasional frustration, especially about the lack of funding for research into her illness, Ita chooses to embrace life’s unexpected turns.
"Life is full of detours."
Recently, Ita completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, a memoir written without the pressures of a full-time job. She described the experience as enjoyable and freeing.
"It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do."
Author's summary: Ita stays resilient and optimistic, finding purpose in writing and focusing on positives despite her health challenges and uncertainties about her future.
