The clown shifts between a demon baby bat and a pickled daddy before settling on its most familiar form. In the first two episodes of It: Welcome to Derry, Pennywise takes his time to make a dramatic and traumatic entrance.
The marketing has made it clear that Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise, building excitement for his small-screen debut. Andy Muschietti, the film franchise’s director, is involved in bringing this iconic character to television.
In a recent conversation with io9, Jason Fuchs, the writer, producer, and co-showrunner, explained their approach to Pennywise’s form:
“We wanted to understand why a shape-shifter who has a virtually infinite number of forms it could take continues to take the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown.”
Fuchs added that fans can expect satisfying answers that will also introduce new mysteries:
“The answers themselves suggest fresh mysteries and new questions.”
Given the freedom granted by Stephen King to explore the story as they wish, the creators are eager to add fresh elements to this horror legend. The early episodes cleverly manipulate audience expectations, challenging perceptions of It while engaging both viewers and young characters in psychological twists.
The series aims to deepen the mystery of Pennywise’s form while expanding Stephen King’s universe, balancing suspense with innovative storytelling.
