Jeopardy! issued an apology after a clue about John Pork sparked backlash among fans. During the October 24 episode, the category was titled “Daddy is there really a…” and included the clue:
No: A.I. Generated The TikTok Image of this pig/human eventually killed by Tim Cheese.
The correct response was “Who is John Pork?” but none of the contestants buzzed in. Host Ken Jennings admitted, “I didn’t understand any of that,” prompting laughter from the contestants.
John Pork is a viral internet figure depicted as a pig-human hybrid, with a man's body and a pig's head. The character is digitally created and became popular on TikTok. A joke among fans claimed he had “died,” leading to the “RIP John Pork” online trend. Despite a rumor in 2023 that he was shot and killed, John Pork continues to post videos on TikTok.
Fans criticized the clue for inaccurately calling John Pork “AI-generated,” as the character predates much of the AI art trend. In response, Jeopardy! released an apology video featuring Ken Jennings:
“When we played a clue recently on Jeopardy! about John Pork, I remarked that ‘I didn’t understand a word of it.’ Well, I’ve had the chance to learn quite a bit since that clue aired about the late Mr. Pork, including the fact that some viewers took exception with our description of him as AI-generated. Now, even though AI is used heavily in many of his TikToks, it’s possible that wasn’t the best wording to refer to his original appearances.”
Jeopardy! acknowledged the mistake in the clue's wording and apologized for any confusion or offense caused by the inaccurate description of John Pork as AI-generated.
