Rowan Dean mourns the passing of Graham 'Richo' Richardson, a key Labor power broker and Sky News Australia commentator, who died aged 76.
It is with great sadness that we learned this morning of the death of Graham Richardson, affectionately known as Richo to friends and foes alike.
Richo was a towering figure in Labor politics and later became a feisty, articulate, insightful, and entertaining commentator on Sky News Australia. He played pivotal roles in the most successful Labor government in Australia's history, with insights and knowledge unmatched by many.
I was privileged to call Graham a friend, enjoying not only lively television debates but also many entertaining lunches at his favorite Sydney haunts.
For years, Richo and I sparred on Paul Murray Live, fiercely debating left-right political issues. Our passionate exchanges surprised many who saw us laughing and sharing beers afterward, convinced we were bitter enemies.
"Yes, he could be ruthless, yes he could be forthright, yes he could be, in his own words, ‘a right bastard’."
This toughness, combined with his charm, was central to Richo’s remarkable popularity and success in national politics.
Graham Richardson's legacy is one of sharp political insight, fierce debate, and a unique ability to blend toughness with friendship across the political spectrum.
Author’s note: Graham Richardson was a formidable presence in Australian politics and media whose outspoken nature and sharp intellect will be deeply missed.
