Saoirse Hogan Balfe, a 12-year-old athlete from Carlow, has defied expectations to become the second-best Muay Thai fighter worldwide in her age and weight category. Despite being a part-time wheelchair user with autism, her determination led her to win a silver medal at the International Federation of Muay Thai (IFMA) World Championships in Abu Dhabi.
Inspired by Carlow Muay Thai champion Chloe Black, Saoirse expressed her desire to try the sport after watching her compete on television. While this was an ambitious dream for many children her age, Saoirse's commitment made it a reality.
Saoirse’s parents supported her decision to join the Carlow Muaythai Gym, although they were initially unsure how she would cope with the sport's physical demands. Muay Thai is a traditional Thai martial art involving punches, kicks, elbows, and knees in a full-contact fighting style.
"I’d love to do that and give it a go."

Saoirse’s achievement highlights how resilience and passion can overcome physical challenges to reach world-class athletic success.
