Roseanna, the mother of Saoirse Ruane, strongly condemned DJ Carey’s recent behavior during an interview with RTE Radio One. She expressed deep disappointment in the former Kilkenny hurler’s actions.
DJ Carey was sentenced to five and a half years in prison after being found guilty on 10 counts of fraud. He deceived friends and fans by pretending to have cancer, unlawfully obtaining over €440,000.
An image of DJ Carey wearing a fake nasogastric tube circulated online in an attempt to convince others of his cancer diagnosis. Roseanna Ruane condemned this act, highlighting its emotional impact.
“The image can be very triggering to people and families whose loved ones have suffered a similar disease,” Roseanna explained.
She added, “Saoirse, she would have looked up to the likes of DJ Carey at one point years ago.”
Roseanna’s remarks emphasize the harm caused not only by the fraud but also by the disrespect and insensitivity towards those affected by cancer.
This case highlights how deceit involving serious illness can deeply hurt victims and their families, showing a severe lack of empathy from the offender.
