A plan by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico was stopped before execution, a US official told Reuters on Friday. The plot, targeting Ambassador Einat Kranz Neiger, began late last year and persisted into the first half of 2025.
“The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat,” the official said.
The official, speaking anonymously, highlighted Iran’s ongoing global targeting of diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and critics.
“This is just the latest in a long history of Iran’s global targeting of diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and anyone who disagrees with them, something that should concern every country where there is an Iranian presence.”
Details on how the assassination plan was discovered or thwarted were not disclosed. Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York declined to comment.
The United States and its allies have repeatedly accused Iran and its proxies of plotting violent attacks against opponents abroad. British and Swedish security services warned last year about Iran using criminal groups to execute covert operations.
This foiled assassination attempt against Israel’s ambassador underscores Iran’s persistent use of violent tactics against its global adversaries, raising security concerns internationally.
