Ilhan, a London resident, shared her difficult experience while receiving benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on social media. She described the process of claiming Universal Credit as humiliating and emotionally distressing.
“I’m literally sitting here holding back tears because of how angry I am. You know when you’re just so angry you want to cry? And it’s literally all because of Universal Credit.”
Ilhan called the government "stingy" and expressed frustration with the strict rules imposed during benefit claims. She criticized the DWP staff, saying their attitude made the process worse.
“When I tell you this government is stingy about giving money and then the people that are working there, you would think that the money is being taken from their father’s pocket. It’s just such jobsworths but also just so unhelpful.”
She highlighted that mandatory video calls were part of the process, which she found stressful, preferring simple phone calls.
“It was actually like a humiliation ritual.”
Despite the difficulties, Ilhan emphasized her genuine need for support and recognition of the benefits she is entitled to.
“I do need support and I’m due the support.”
Ilhan’s testimony highlights the emotional toll and bureaucratic challenges faced by Universal Credit claimants, underlining the need for more compassionate support from the government and DWP staff.
