Mary Sheffield Makes History as Detroit’s First Woman Mayor

Mary Sheffield’s 12-year tenure on the Detroit City Council reached a historic milestone when the city elected her as its first female mayor. Unofficial results showed Sheffield defeating fellow Democrat and pastor Solomon Kinloch, securing 77% of the vote compared to Kinloch’s 21%.

The Associated Press called the race at 9:20 p.m. on election night. Even with only 17% of ballots reported during her victory speech, Sheffield maintained a strong lead, signaling wide support from voters.
