As part of the EFL Week of Action, Emily Syme visited Evergreen Primary Academy to join the Robins Foundation’s Active Maths sessions for Key Stage 1 and 2 students. She took part in games and exercises that linked physical activity with numeracy learning.
These sessions aim to make maths enjoyable and approachable, especially for pupils needing extra help outside the standard classroom environment. By combining movement and learning, the activities promote confidence and interest in mathematics.
“I’ve studied Maths at University, so I’m really interested in the education side of the Foundation’s work. It was great to help inspire kids to develop their maths skills in an engaging and active way.”
“The kids all had a lot of energy and it was fun to help them practice their times tables while staying active and working together in teams.”
Students participated in number-based challenges and multiplication games, earning star points for their enthusiasm and focus. The Robins Foundation has been running four weekly Active Maths sessions at Evergreen for the past two years.
Senior Community Coach Ollie said, “Having Emily come down to a Maths session is important for the kids to see that you can be passionate about lots of different things. We use football and activity as tools to educate and inspire, so having a role model who enjoys and excels in maths is fantastic for them.”
