Executive Accused of 'Polyfilla Politics' Over Health Pay

Health trade unions in Northern Ireland plan to hold detailed talks with the health minister and officials regarding pay parity for healthcare workers.

Stormont Executive's Budget Overspend

The Stormont Executive approved a £100 million overspend in the health budget, which has been taken from next year's funding allocation.

"This is chaotic," said SDLP MLA Matthew O'Toole. "This is 'Polyfilla politics' from the Executive, make-do and mend. These are promises that have been made to healthcare workers for years now, they should have planned this in their budgets."

Union Concerns Over Future Funding

Unison expressed worries about how the Executive managed to find the money to pay workers and how future payments will be financed.

"Pay is fundamental to the delivery of public services, so it is right that we do look at pay as something that has to be dealt with and has to be dealt with properly for the workforce," said John Patrick Clayton from Unison. "But of course it is a matter of concern that this is having to be done."

Next Steps

Health trade unions intend to engage in detailed discussions on restoring pay parity for healthcare employees.

Summary: Northern Ireland's health unions criticize the Executive's ad hoc funding approach to pay parity, emphasizing the need for proper planning and sustainable financing.
