Toronto Maple Leafs centre David Kampf is currently away from the team, reflecting on his future after beginning the season in the AHL. At 30 years old, Kampf was waived at the start of the season and assigned to the AHL's Toronto Marlies.
In four appearances with the Marlies, he recorded one assist. TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston mentioned on Thursday’s Insider Trading that a decision about Kampf’s status could come by the weekend.
“They’ve got a lot of forwards up and down the organization, and one whose status has been a little bit unclear in the last week is David Kampf,” said Johnston. “He’s been away from the Toronto Marlies, pondering his future, what he wants to do next. I’m told that could be coming to a resolution by this weekend. Could even see Kampf rejoin the Marlies. We’ll see what happens there.”
The 2024-25 season was challenging for Kampf, his first under head coach Craig Berube. He recorded five goals and 13 points over 59 games, while his average ice time dropped to a career low of 12 minutes and 24 seconds.
His current time away from the team suggests he is evaluating the next steps in his career amid fluctuating performance and team dynamics.
Summary: David Kampf, after a difficult season and AHL demotion, is currently away from the Maple Leafs, considering his future as the team evaluates forward positions.
