Manchester United youngster James Overy has been called up to the Australia national team for this month's friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. Socceroos manager Tony Popovic has included 11 new players in his squad, with Overy among the promising talents.
Overy, who will turn 18 this weekend, joined Manchester United in summer 2024 on a scholarship before signing a professional contract in July. In May, Ruben Amorim brought him and other youths into first-team training ahead of a Premier League match against Chelsea.
Shortly after arriving, Overy suffered an eight-month injury layoff. He returned to action with the Under-18s in February and has been a regular in Darren Fletcher's side this season. He also featured for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.
“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,”
said former Under-18s manager Adam Lawrence, commending Overy's resilience after his long injury.
This national team call-up highlights Overy's rapid progress and growing reputation as a key talent both at club and international levels.
Summary: Manchester United's James Overy, overcoming injury setbacks, earned a first senior Australia squad selection, reflecting his promising development and resilience.
